1 Who We Are

Whatiz is an iOS application developed independently. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you use the Whatiz app available on the Apple App Store.

2 Information We Do Not Collect

Whatiz does not collect or store:

–Your name, email address or any personal identifiers
–Your location data
–Your contacts, photos or any other device content
–Payment information — all billing is handled by Apple
–Your reading history or Knowledge Coins — stored only on your device and iCloud

We have no way to identify you personally. The App works entirely without an account.

3 Information Sent to Third-Party AI Service

Whatiz uses OpenAI's GPT-4o-mini API to generate educational topic content and deep-dive explanations. When you use the app, the following data is transmitted to OpenAI via our secure Cloudflare Worker proxy:

–Topic titles — the "What is..." question text used to generate daily topic cards. This is app-generated content, not personal information.
–Category names — the category associated with each topic, which may include custom category names you have created yourself. Custom category names are user-generated content and are sent solely to improve the relevance of AI responses.

The following is never included in OpenAI API requests:

–Your name, email or any personal identifier
–Your device ID or IP address
–Your location
–Your reading history or Knowledge Coins

By using Whatiz, you consent to topic titles and category names (including custom ones you create) being sent to OpenAI to generate responses. OpenAI processes this data per their privacy policy at openai.com/privacy. You will be asked to confirm this on first launch.

4 Other Data We Collect

In addition to OpenAI API requests, we may collect:

–Anonymous analytics — aggregated, non-identifiable crash reports and usage statistics to diagnose issues and improve performance. No personal data is included.
–Subscription status — Apple provides us with your subscription state (active, expired, in trial) but not your payment details or Apple ID.

5 How Your Data Is Stored

All personal app data including your Knowledge Coins, read history, selected categories and preferences is stored in the following locations:

–On your device — via UserDefaults in a secure App Group shared only between the App and its widget.
–iCloud Key-Value Store — synced privately to your personal iCloud account. Only you have access via your Apple ID.

We never have access to your iCloud data. It is encrypted and controlled entirely by Apple and your Apple ID.

6 Third-Party Services

Whatiz uses the following third-party services to function:

–OpenAI — receives topic titles and category names (including user-defined categories) to generate AI content. Data is routed via our Cloudflare Worker proxy. OpenAI provides the same or equivalent data protection per their privacy policy at openai.com/privacy.
–Cloudflare — secure proxy between the App and OpenAI. Keeps API keys off the device. Cloudflare may collect standard network metadata per their privacy policy.
–Apple App Store — handles all subscription billing, receipts and refunds. Apple's privacy policy governs all payment data.
–Apple iCloud — used for private on-device sync. Governed by Apple's iCloud privacy policy.

We do not use advertising SDKs, social media trackers or analytics platforms that collect personal data.

7 Children's Privacy

Whatiz is not directed at children under the age of 9. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 9.

If you believe a child under 9 has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take steps to delete it promptly.

8 Data Retention

Since we do not collect personal data, there is nothing to retain or delete on our end. Your local app data can be cleared at any time by deleting the App from your device.

Your iCloud sync data can be managed through your iCloud settings on your Apple device.

9 Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have rights regarding your personal data including the right to access, correct or delete it. Since Whatiz does not collect identifiable personal data, most of these rights are inherently satisfied.

10 Security

We take reasonable technical measures to protect any data that passes through our systems, including:

–HTTPS encryption for all API communications
–A Cloudflare Worker proxy to keep API keys secure and off the device
–No centralised database storing user data

No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. We do our best but cannot guarantee absolute security.

11 Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by updating the last updated date at the top of this page.

We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
